The perennial section at MUZARDI mainly works on two viable enterprises namely coffee and Banana. Bananas are a major food crop in the Lake Victoria Crescent Ecological Zone and are currently grown for both food and income generation. Coffee on the other hand is a key cash crop for the people in the zone.
Objectives of the section
• To produce seedlings/planting materials of coffee and bananas for commercial purposes and dissemination to uptake pathways.
• To train stakeholders in good agronomic practices.
The coffee unit has four (4) tissue Robusta lines that are resistant to coffee wilt disease and these were set up in mother gardens for multiplication of clean planting materials; (R2, R3, R6 and R7).These were obtained from Kituuza/ NaCORRI. The section demonstrates good agronomic management practices of Coffee.
The Coffee Nursery
The unit was set up to multiply Elite coffee and Clonal coffee. The on-station planted coffee mother garden has 6 lines of elite coffee A, B, C, D, F and H
The section avails clean planting materials of improved local bananas like; Mbwazirume, Kisansa, Mpologoma and Phia 17 to stakeholders in the zone and beyond.
It also has improved Hybrid Matooke varieties of M2 and M9. Attributes of these cultivars include; Tolerance to weevils, drought and Sigatoka disease (both yellow and black Sigatoka) which are common in the Lake Victoria Crescent Agro ecological Zone.
